By the way, if you Google the word cosmetics, ULTA comes first followed by Mary Kay then Sephora in natural search. Sephora pays to be on top.

Emrah has succeeded only in digging himself into a deeper and deeper hole. He's tried to backpeddle and cover his blunders by only making them worse. All he has suceeded in doing is showing his extremely poor salesmanship skills by peddling his product/service (the word service is used loosely here). A successful salesperson knows to provide the customer with what they want, not to threaten, intimidate, and force something down their throats.

Thanks for the mention! It will be interesting to see what people outside the beauty world think of what happened with the Total Beauty CEO, his video response and the article responses by bloggers. Some of us are so close to the issue, so we see the tiny details.

Thanks again!

A further thought on this that I did not touch on - this is a clear foray into direct to consumer retail sales for P&G. Could this be a sign that P&G is growing increasingly tired of being squeezed on margins by big box retailers, namely Walmart? We'll keep a close eye on P&G's acquisition activity to understand if this push into retail is part of an overall business strategy, or this was simply a move to augment their men's offerings.

It might be interesting to see if someone purchases the brand. It seems from the response that there is still enough interest to continue in some form - perhaps its not big enough for P&G to worry about anymore, but could be a great business for someone else.

The film was released today - it's a stunning tribute to Hitchcock-style films, and of course, Marion Cotillard looks amazing. John Galliano designed the costumes for the film as well. Follow this link to see the first chapter of the film- http://www.stylelist.com/blog/2009/05/20/diors-the-lady-noire-affair-chapter-1-now-showing/.

Viewed in the context of big beauty brands, it seems reasonable that they would focus on brand building. However, the social web enables a new type of experience much more like the traditional retail counter model - a real person talking to another person about what they need and what products might work for them. We already know this works, it just got easier to do with more people.

Once brands realize that the social web just extends what they already know about how people learn about their products, I would be really surprised if they never turned back to the industrial approaches they have become so used to.
